(4,566m.) is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth highest mountain in Africa. It is a very underrated mountain to climb because of it’s close proximity to Mount Kilimanjaro (the highest mountain in Africa). A visit to this spectacular mountain located in Arusha National Park is an unforgettable experience. Climbing mount Meru is a perfect acclimatization procedure before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Mt. Meru is a horseshoe-shaped volcanic crater with a spectacularly narrow ridge and superb all round views.
The cliffs of the inner wall below the summit are over 1500 m. high, and inside the caldera is a subsidiary peak called the Ash Cone (3,670 m.) which last erupted only 100 years ago. There is an immense variety of trees and plant life, adding considerably to the interest of the trek. Mt. Meru is part of Arusha National Park, and the lower slopes of the mountain, shelter a variety of wildlife. The routes below Miriakamba Hut are more like walking safaris than mountain climbs and our guide is an informed and armed park ranger (in case we get too close to some of the animals!). You are almost certain to see buffaloes, warthogs , monkeys, elephants, giraffes and a variety of birdlife.
Although hiking distances between huts seem short, it is important to allow enough time for proper acclimatization. We recommend a four day climb on Mount Meru although fitter climbers may choose to hike the mountain in three days. If climbing Mount Meru as an acclimatization trek for Kilimanjaro, we recommend at least one full day of rest in Arusha between climbs. You may also choose to go on a safari between treks.
